The National Water Research and Development Initiative Act of 2009 (H.R. 1145) is proceeding through the House of Representatives, where it was recently reported out of the Committee on Science and Technology. The bill would
-Establish an interagency committee on water supply.
-Establish a national water initiative coordination office with a full-time staff to support the work of the interagency committee.
-Require development of a plan that will prioritize federal water research and related funding.
-Establishes specific outcomes for federal agencies on the interagency committee including, among several others, a national water census.
-Authorize the Department of Energy to study the development of impaired waters for energy production.
